Since I am a trainer and pretty self-motivated, all the things I would say to a client, I say to myself when I workout. Plus, I can probably take the tough love a little more than I delve it out. Here are some things I’d love to hear from a trainer, and a few things I like to say to encourage and motivate my clients.

HAUL ASS!

Let’s start with a fun one. So, my favorite show ever, next to How I Met Your Mother, is FRIENDS. One of my favorite lines from the show is whenΒ Phoebe gives the guys a game plan for getting the fancy red car out of it’s parking spot. She breaks into the car and when the alarm goes off, yells, ‘HAUL ASS.’ Just watch below:

I use this phrase whenever I am in a hurry or if I need to get somewhere fast. If I’m not making my running time or if I am close to my time on a tabata or about to meet or exceed my reps on an AMRAP, I want my trainer hollering this at me. Not only will I laugh, but I will do just that, Haul Ass.

MIND ON YOUR MUSCLE, JENA. MIND ON YOUR MUSCLE.

Sometimes when we are in the thick of working out, hating the person that created it, counting down the seconds until we can be done, we forget what muscles we are working. We just go through the motions. Or maybe we are doing a move and we just don’t feel it, or it doesn’t make sense. I like to remind my clients and bootcampers of the muscles they are working for each exercise. And, to keep their mind on that muscle. Sometimes it takes your mind off the time. Sometimes it makes the exercise hurt even more…wall sits, bicep curls, push-ups! Either way, it hurts so good.

JEN, WHY ARE YOU WORKING OUT? WHY DO YOU WANT ME TO YELL AT YOU/ENCOURAGE YOU?

Probably one of the most important questions to stay motivated. Why the heck are you working out? Why do I have a trainer hollering at me? I want to remind my client and bootcampers of their goals. I want to be reminded of my goals. What’s the point in paying a trainer or going to a class, just to do it? This girl does not want to waste her money on that.

I love being the encourager. One day, I’ll be the trainee. Can’t wait.
