THE EASIEST ENERGY BOOSTING MOCHA CHERRY PROTEIN SMOOTHIE
I should probably say it’s the easiest…after you cut and de-pit all the cherries. Unless you happen to find frozen cherries. I hear there is actually a contraption to pit cherries, anyone tried it?
This seriously might be the greatest smoothie I’ve ever created. Yes, a bold statement. But I’m going to toot my own horn.
The idea for this smoothie came to me just before BlogFest, but I didn’t end up actually making it until last week. It’s all based on my favorite coffee from my days as a barista at Starbucks.
Back when I was living in Boston – Cambridge to be exact – I worked at the Starbucks in Harvard Yard. We were one of the few stores in the area that had a Clover machine. Now, if you’ve never gotten the pleasure of enjoying a cup of coffee made on the Clover, look up the closest Starbucks in your area with a machine, and go get a cup. Like right after reading this post. Guys, it’s so worth it.

Anyway, back in 2012, there was a coffee that had sun-dried beans or something like that. The coffee was slightly sweet and chocolaty, with notes of cherry. Eating a piece of chocolate with sipping this particular coffee created this party in your mouth that tasted like a chocolate covered cherry (I can’t remember what it was called, so if anyone happens to know, leave me a comment!). It was just amazing.
Since I had a pack of chocolate protein and frozen cherries, specifically for a smoothie, I knew adding coffee to the equation would only make it taste better. And I was right…toot, toot!
For me, this smoothie works best in the morning, for breakfast (or even post workout)**. Lately, I’ve been on the coffee train, so combining my coffee with my smoothie seemed like a logical thing to do. Plus, there are so many benefits associated with coffee. Another no brainer – chocolate. For breakfast. Yes, please. And finally, cherries. Why cherries, you ask?
Cherries have been shown to reduce post-exercise muscle soreness (DOMS – remember from last week?), provide antioxidant protection and reduce inflammation. Plus, they taste great. And support healthy sleep – I like to drink tart cherry juice before bed.
Basically, when you toss in the protein, coconut flour (yes, special secret ingredient!), and greens, you are getting another energy boosting powerhouse smoothie to start off your morning right!
- 1/2 cup non-dairy
- 1 cup cold brewed coffee
- 1/4 cup tart cherry juice
- 1 serving chocolate protein powder
- 1 serving greens powder
- 1 TBSP coconut flour
- 1/2 cup frozen cherries
- additional ice, if desired.
- Add all the ingredients to a high speed blender and blend until smooth.
- Add the cherries and additional ice, if using, and blend until thick and creamy.
** When I create a smoothie, it’s usually a smoothie I can enjoy in the morning for breakfast. This means it usually contains a protein, a fat, and I like to sneak in something green. I don’t have anything against regular smoothies with just frozen fruit and a liquid, I just like to balance it out with protein and fats. That said, I am positive this combination would still taste just as delicious if you choose to consume this as a dessert smoothie and cut out the protein + greens.

Have you guys tried coconut flour in a smoothie before? I really like the consistency of the smoothie! As I’m reading over this, I’m wishing I hadn’t used the last of cherries in a smoothie bowl yesterday because I want this smoothie!
Tell me what you are up to today – I have gym class with the kids, a fitness job fair to crash, a nutrition client meeting, I’m getting my nails did, and I have to go renew my license plates. I COMPLETELY forgot to renew them until my mom mentioned it yesterday and since I changed my name, I actually have to go and sit in the BMV to get it changed. Blah! And I have 2 classes to teach.
