Today, I want to chat the benefits of plant based protein, touch on why hemp protein is unique and then share my ultimate hemp protein smoothie bowl recipe! It’s been a hot minute since I shared a recipe here, right? I’m coming back with a bang (and an updated recipe page!!). Ooo, and you get a discount! So many good things in this post!!

A Hemp Protein Smoothie has become one of my go-to breakfast's lately. With Manitoba Harvest Hemp Protein Smoothie powder, it's so easy to make the ULTIMATE smoothie bowl for any breakfast...or snack!Clients will often ask me, should I drink whey protein or plant protein? Really, the questions are more like: ‘Is muscle milk okay to drink?’ ‘I drink whey protein every morning, is that okay?’ My answer, like most of my answers when it comes to health and fitness, is, IT DEPENDS. If you had a nickel for every trainer or nutrition coach that gave you that answer, right? Would you be rich? I’d be rich if I got something every time said those 2 words to a client.

It depends because different types of protein will give you different results AND your gut will likely react differently to each protein.

Personally, there is no whey, I’d every consume whey protein unless I was the one feeding the cow’s and making the protein powder. And even then, I’m not so sure. I’ve had WAY too many bad gut reactions to whey protein, even the grass-fed variety, that I don’t consume it and I often don’t recommend it to clients. Now, that doesn’t mean that whey or casein based proteins are not healthy. However, with the way certain products are processed, the hormones and antibiotics that the animals are fed and or gut’s reaction are just a few reasons why I don’t recommend it.

But, you know that every BODY is different and everyone handles things differently. If your body is okay with whey or casein and you are taking it in context with your personal fitness goals, then have at it!

After I tell my client’s ‘IT DEPENDS’ and explain why I don’t particularly recommend whey/casein protein powder, I point them to a plant based protein powder. Plant protein powder is more easily digestible, than whey or casein, often contains a healthy dose of powdered greens and uses FAR less resources than whey/casein. Plus, most people are not eating a diet rich in plants, so this is a good first step on their healthy living journey.

If you listen to The Model Health Show at all, in at least 1 episode you will hear Shawn talk about the benefits of hemp protein. It’s a globular protein, rich in edestin and albumin, making it the most digestible and bioavailable protein for the human body. I could say his spiel near verbatim – but that’s good. Now I know, right?

The other cool thing about hemp is that it is a complete protein, containing all 8 amino acids the body must obtain from food, unlike some other plant based protein sources. And we learned last week that hemp has a near perfect omega-6:omega:3 ratio. I don’t know about you, but I’d say hemp seeds are a ‘must add’ to any diet.

Manitoba Harvest is making some awesome products lately. I am a HUGE smoothie fan and was excited to see they came out with a hemp protein smoothie powder. What made me even more excited than being able to try 3 different flavors was that each flavor contains GREENS!! Manitoba has combined their HempPro 70 Protein Powder with organic harvest greens that include spinach, kale and broccoli, into a convenient hemp protein smoothie powder. It’s still jam packed with a healthy dose of omega-3’s, contains 15 grams of plant based protein and is lightly sweetened with coconut sugar.

My samples arrived in a cute box, complete with measuring spoons and a shake bottle! I tried the Vanilla Chai first and loved it! I mixed it with some turmeric, banana, carrots and cinnamon and the flavors married perfectly! I’ve never been a huge fan of mixed berry protein powders, so I mixed it with the chocolate and blueberries, which was quite tasty! I also mixed those two into an energy bar that I might just have to share next week.

The chocolate. I was so expecting to love the chocolate, however, it didn’t tickle my fancy the first time I tried it. Then I got the idea to mix it with my fresh, homemade almond butter and homemade almond milk and the result was AMAZING. As a smoothie, all the flavors blend (heh) together so well. As a smoothie bowl, it’s like a nice cream blizzard…woulda been a good name for this instead! Next time!

I will say, personally, I did not enjoy the mixed berry and chocolate on their own, i.e., with water, in a shaker bottle. A non-dairy milk helped a bit to add some creaminess, but I’ll probably save these powders for days when I’m not on the go and can take a minute to use the blender to add a few ingredients to bring out the flavors.

RECIPE

INGREDIENTS

  • 1/2 cup Almond Milk
  • 2 Frozen Bananas, thick chopped
  • 1 scoop Manitoba Harvest Chocolate Hemp Protein Smoothie Power or any chocolate protein powder
  • 1 TBSP Hemp Seeds
  • 1 heaping TBSP Almond Butter
  • 1 TBSP Cinnamon
  • 1 tsp Maca powder
  • For topping: granola, Cinnamon Puffins, banana chips, hemp seeds

DIRECTIONS

Add everything but the toppings to a blender. Blend. Add to bowl, add toppings and enjoy!
